There are some funny bits and a couple of good jump scares, but when I say that the movie is light on exposition, I mean it. They try to take care of the entire who, what, why in a last-minute monologue, but it doesn’t really work. I did like the premise, and maybe if I played the video game this movie was based on, I’d have a little better understanding of what’s what, but as is, I just like movies that fill you in on the world a bit more. The acting was decent, though the characters suffer from chronic stupidity, which I find annoying in horror movies. I feel like at times they make decisions that no reasonable person would make in their situation, and it takes you away from any sense of realism. Director David Sandberg used a lot of practical visual effects instead of CGI, which I love in my horror movies. Overall, if you’re a horror fan this is worth the watch, even if you wait until it hits steaming services.
